Stupid Move of the Year Award: Obama relieves McChrystal of command

Gen. David Petraeus named to take over troubled Afghan war

America’s most competent military commander, Gen. McChrytstal, was forced out because he bruised Obama’s (and his buddies) egos. The truth hurts someday, and this is a perfect example.

Yes, McChrystal questioned some moves by Obama and his Pentagon parrots. So what? The “chain-of-command” crap, is just that. Crap. The fact is, Obama got rid of a critic, and the troops lost the best commander they’ve ever had.

I'm sorry to see him go, too, though mostly because I think that the war will probably drag on longer under Petraeus. That said, I think you're making an error by characterizing the decision as an emotional reaction to a personal insult. Obama's been insulted more thoroughly and more personally than almost any other president in history - well, maybe with the exception of GWB - and he clearly doesn't react to them. But what president would/could/should tolerate public, published insults from the general in charge of carrying out his war plan? Really, how could Obama have maintained any pretense of civilian control if he allowed McChrystal's clear insubordination to stand? You can call bs on the chain of command, but it's not like generals don't understand the concept. As much as I would have preferred to see him stay, I can't help but think that if McChrystal is stupid enough to trash the president to Rolling Stone (!), then he's too stupid for the job.
