Trump has been on a mission to restore Christopher Columbus's reputation since 2021 for one bigly reason; he believes every person in America with Italian descent will vote for him if he glorifies Columbus. It's a given in his twisted little brain.
In April 2025, a few months into his second term, Trump declared that he was "bringing Columbus Day back from the ashes" in a Truth Social post.
Earlier this year Trump put up a statue of the famous explorer in White House grounds. It was a replica of the sculpture of Columbus that stood in Baltimore in 2020 and was toppled by protestors.
The 13-foot replica of the piece, made from fragments of the original sculpture, is now in front of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
Columbus Day is still marked as a federal holiday, but some states and cities instead honor the day as Indigenous People's Day.
It makes no sense to honor an Italian explorer who came to America and subjected the original inhabitants to atrocities - including devasting loss of life, tradition and lands.
In 2021, President Biden became the first president to issue a proclamation recognizing Indigenous People's Day.
President Biden wrote, "For generations, Federal policies systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures. Today we recognize Indigenous peoples' resilience and strength as well as the immeasurable positive impact they have made on every aspect of American society."
Back to the present Trump floated the idea of renaming the Pacific Ocean that Columbus sailed on to "Trump Ocean." He also said the same for the Atlantic Ocean during a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee last week.
The fact that the midterms are just around the corner has given Trump more incentive to butter up Italian American voters in November.
As it Stands, it's also notable that Trump admires the Italian Mafia's way of doing business.
